Coinbase: Hold Until Deribit, Prediction Markets And USDC Turn Into Profit

Summary Coinbase is rated Hold, reflecting strong liquidity, derivatives growth, and diversification, but lacks sustained operating profitability and faces cyclical crypto risks. Q3 earnings on October 29 are pivotal; I expect revenue of $1. 12–$1.
22B and underlying operating losses up to $75M, with a Q4 outlook critical for rating changes. COIN trades at high revenue multiples (8. 8x FY26, 6.
9x FY27), justified only if revenue rebounds; cost control and product margin evidence are needed for an upgrade. Key risks include declining retail activity, USDC revenue volatility, Deribit integration, ongoing stock compensation, and competitive threats from Robinhood and Circle. Hold Into the Q3 Test Coinbase (COIN) has some positive product updates for its Q3 earnings‚ such as derivatives market-share gains, faster prediction-market growth and all-time-high USDC balances during Q2.
Lower retail spot trading volume during Q2 contributed to Coinbase's GAAP operating loss during Q2. The October 29 Q3 earnings release date is key to assessing the quality of Coinbase's earnings alongside trading volume. I suggest holding COIN shares.
COIN has a variety of assets and other sources of income able to absorb a soft quarter. Shares of COIN are trading based on anticipated future benefits. Possible concerns about this investment recommendation include questions about whether profits from investments in Deribit and prediction markets will materialize and whether income from USDC and other sources will be stable despite changes in customer holdings and interest rates.
Also of concern is whether restructuring savings will be used to boost operating income rather than for other purposes‚ including customer loyalty initiatives and stock awards. Diversified, but Still Tied to the Crypto Cycle Coinbase has diversified into other financial services in addition to crypto brokerage services. Revenue from transactions remains an important part of Coinbase's business‚ accounting for about 52% of second-quarter 2026 net revenue.
Other financial services and products accounted for about 48% of second-quarter 2026 net revenue. Other financial services and products include revenue from stablecoins‚ blockchain rewards‚ interest and finance-fee income‚ custody services‚ and other services. Revenue from consumer transactions is the largest component of revenue from transactions.
Revenue from institutional transactions is valuable for other reasons‚ including Coinbase's ownership of Deribit‚ an options and other derivatives exchange. Coinbase is in a unique position to drive transformation (COIN 2Q 2026 Update) The revenue opportunity has advantages and disadvantages. Trading revenue is repeatable but highly cyclical.
USDC revenue is comparable to balance-linked spread income on USDC reserves and depends on many variables‚ including interest rates and the number of USDC tokens in circulation and held by Coinbase and others. Under the Circle agreement ‚ Coinbase is entitled to 50% of residual USDC reserve income after specified allocations. This can soften the impact of reduced trading revenue but does not provide stable revenue.
Coinbase has meaningful trading‚ custody‚ and derivatives businesses. Stablecoin economics still depend on Circle (CRCL). Prediction markets carry external exchange fees borne by Coinbase.
I expect to see network advantages‚ such as liquidity, relationships with regulators and other institutions, and financial resources. I do not see a business insulated from cryptocurrency market risks. Revenue Fell Faster Than Costs Q2 revenue fell 14% sequentially to $1.
220 billion. Q2 transaction revenue fell 21% to $599 million. Q2 subscription and services revenue fell 5% to $555 million.
Lower costs in Q2 did not offset declining revenue. GAAP operating profit was not achieved in Q2. Coinbase met its prior forecasts for operating and stock-compensation expenses but missed its prior forecasts for subscription and services revenue.
2Q financial summary (COIN 2Q 2026 Update) Retail metrics explain recent trends. Quarterly consumer transaction revenue fell 20% sequentially to $452 million‚ and consumer spot trading volume fell 24% to $25. 8 billion.
The revenue-to-volume ratio rose to 1. 75% in the most recent quarter from 1. 68% in the first quarter‚ though the ratio does not reflect consumer spot trading revenue because other revenue-generating activities‚ such as derivatives and prediction markets‚ are factored into revenue.
Monthly transacting users fell to 7. 6 million from 8. 2 million sequentially‚ consistent with less consumer spot trading and a shift in product mix, not stronger engagement, protecting retail monetization.
Transaction revenue for the first 26 days of July was about $130 million. Management warned against trying to predict full Q3 results from partial information. Consensus for Q3 revenue and loss per share is $1.
17 billion and $0. 22‚ respectively. The consensus for Q4 revenue is $1.
34 billion, with slightly positive earnings per share. Q3 and Q4 consensus estimates have moved down since the Q2 release. Consensus estimates are not actual results for Q3.
A Fed interest rate increase took place late in Q3, on September 16, and could benefit USDC reserve income. Only a portion of Q3 revenue is likely to be affected by the rate increase. 3Q Outlook (COIN 2Q 2026 Update) Profitability, Liquidity, and Capital Allocation The purest number for Q2 is the GAAP operating loss of $113.
5 million. Leaving out the operating loss of $31. 7 million related to crypto assets held for operations‚ the restructuring charge of $52.
4 million‚ and the incident recovery of $33. 9 million‚ I estimate an underlying operating loss of $63. 2 million.
This estimate is for an underlying operating loss‚ not an EPS figure. Fair value adjustments to other financial assets and liabilities are presented separately after operating income and should be disregarded in evaluating the trading platform. Adjusted EBITDA was positive $207.
8 million‚ and stock compensation expense was $238. 3 million. Key items to keep in mind include stock compensation‚ which would continue‚ and the lack of any indication in third-quarter guidance of lower stock compensation expense due to reduced headcount.
Another ongoing GAAP expense related to the Deribit acquisition is amortization of intangible assets‚ although it is not part of adjusted expenses. Income Statement (COIN 2Q 2026 Update) Liquidity is a plus for the company. Coinbase had $8.
789 billion in cash and other short-term investments compared with $5. 944 billion in long-term debt. Operating cash flow was $380 million for the first half of the year.
Coinbase repurchased 7. 092 million shares for $1. 243 billion.
The number of shares outstanding declined about 1. 51% during the period‚ suggesting that the share repurchases were substantial beyond offsetting share issuances. Investment results are mixed because the loss-making company used its cash resources to offset share-based compensation costs.
Derivatives Lead, Robinhood and Circle Shape the Rest Coinbase's main competitive strength is derivatives. Notional value of matching activity for the second quarter was $1. 027 trillion‚ down less than 1% from $1.
032 trillion in the first quarter‚ even as overall derivatives market activity declined by 12%. Coinbase's company-defined derivatives market share reached an all-time high. Annualized sales of prediction market products rose 106% quarter over quarter to more than $100 million.
Other metrics of scale are also improving. No margin information is available for either product line. Note that trading volume and profits are not the same.
Robinhood (HOOD) is a major competitor in consumer and event products. Products offered by Robinhood directly compete with Coinbase products. In addition to custody services‚ Coinbase should take steps to safeguard other types of consumer interactions.
Robinhood's second-quarter update shows that it can be expensive for Coinbase to believe that other prediction-market services won't compete with its offerings. Circle is a partner, the issuer of USDC and Coinbase's economic counterparty. Details about USDC revenue and payouts are relevant to Coinbase's risk considerations about concentration of funds and partners.
Profitability comparisons with HOOD and partner CRCL (Seeking Alpha) Valuation and Rating Triggers On October 21‚ the price of COIN stock was $177. 08 per share. The value of COIN's equity on that date, using its period-end shares outstanding‚ was approximately $46.
7 billion‚ or 8. 8 times estimated revenue for fiscal year 2026 and 6. 9 times estimated revenue for fiscal year 2027.
I believe the multiples based on estimated revenue are too high because the FY2026 estimate embeds a sharp revenue decline while the FY2027 estimate assumes a material rebound. Earnings multiples are not useful because of the wide range of estimates of COIN's FY2027 EPS. Other data‚ including revenue‚ and estimates of COIN's revenue provide a better basis for valuation than historical earnings multiples that may be distorted by remeasurement of crypto assets and liabilities.
Weekly price chart of COIN since 2024 (TradingView) My base view is third-quarter revenue of $1. 12 billion to $1. 22 billion and subscription and services revenue in line with management's expectations.
Underlying operating losses of $0 million to $75 million are expected. Fourth-quarter revenue results or a credible outlook of $1. 25 billion to $1.
40 billion would indicate some improvement but not sustained earnings improvements. These results would support my HOLD rating‚ reflecting advantages of the company's diversification strategies and a lack of evidence of sustained operating profitability from cost-cutting efforts. Evidence that would contradict the base case includes evidence of underlying operating profitability from product margins or further declines below base-case expectations.
I would raise Coinbase's rating if Q3 revenues of at least $1. 25 billion or service revenues of at least $580 million and positive underlying income at Coinbase are reported‚ along with a Q4 revenue outcome or credible outlook of at least $1. 45 billion at Coinbase.
Q3 total revenue is a measure of Coinbase's revenue performance. Positive underlying income is a measure of cost control. The Q4 test prevents premature rating upgrades based on a single strong quarter.
I would watch for other reports‚ including the Q4 earnings report‚ to confirm the information needed for a rating upgrade. Fair value adjustments are not considered. Risks to an upgrade include negative underlying income at Coinbase and weaker-than-expected Q4 results.
And lower my rating if third-quarter total revenue is less than $1. 1 billion or third-quarter subscription and services revenue is less than $500 million and the third-quarter underlying operating loss is at least $100 million‚ and the fourth-quarter revenue outcome or credible outlook is less than $1. 2 billion.
These are signs that strategies to grow the company are not addressing spot trading concerns and that cost-cutting measures are insufficient to make up for lost revenue. The expected recovery would need to be reset. Further deterioration in future periods would add to the case for lowering the rating.
Other events‚ including regulatory and impairment concerns‚ could also cause us to lower the rating. Product-level revenue and profitability information would counter my view. Key Risks and What to Watch Declining retail sales are the main risk.
Declines in retail activity and user engagement with retail sales negatively impact retail profits until replacement products can be introduced. Relevant retail sales metrics to monitor include the number of retail transactions and users. Sales of derivative products provide some benefit‚ but disclosed margin conversion would better mitigate the risks of declining retail sales.
USDC revenue risks include several factors‚ such as lower average balances and a lower share of USDC held by Coinbase‚ lower average balances and a lower share of USDC held by other institutions‚ and lower yields on USDC reserves. I suggest tracking long-term trends in average balances and shares held by Coinbase instead of quarterly data. Higher federal rates and other factors related to corporate allocations help reduce these risks‚ but concentration in one economic counterparty, Circle, makes the offset imperfect.
Deribit presents additional risks. Most of the purchase price was assigned to goodwill and intangible assets. These assignments could lead to ongoing amortization in earnings and impairment costs for Deribit.
Other prediction market risks include higher exchange fees for greater trading volumes. Information on market share and other revenue and cost considerations for the acquired companies and evidence of impairment can be used to evaluate whether scale is benefiting shareholders in the prediction market. In addition‚ continuing cost and control risks could hinder business activities.
Even after layoffs and other reductions in the workforce‚ cost risk and risk related to stock compensation remain‚ and management time and effort spent addressing control risks and weaknesses could increase costs. High liquidity and the ability to repurchase stock can reduce some related risks‚ but other issues‚ including continued stock dilution and questions about the quality of earnings‚ remain. Hold Pending Proof of Margin I rate Coinbase stock as a hold.
Advantages of owning Coinbase stock include its financial position and improving derivatives franchise. Disadvantages include the high share price‚ which implies that investors expect the company's operations to improve before new products can fund that recovery. My view of the company's stock changes as other considerations‚ such as revenue sources and fixed costs‚ are evaluated to understand business profitability.
Favorable information about revenues from Deribit‚ prediction markets‚ and USDC holdings and few stock issuances that would dilute ownership may make COIN stock a good investment. Other factors that may make COIN stock a poor investment include more retail investor competition and other risks to stablecoins and fixed costs. View COIN stock as a monitored position in a company transitioning to a new business model‚ not a proven escape from the cryptocurrency trading cycle.
