CNN licenses journalism to Google as publishers embrace AI deals

CNN has entered into a multiyear deal whereby Google will be entitled to use its journalism in experimental generative AI products. The agreement, which was revealed on October 15, 2026, will provide CNN with compensation for its content, although specific financial terms have not been disclosed. The agreement provides an important option for media companies.
They can now choose to negotiate and reach an agreement with the AI vendors or to go to court in order to recover their losses. Google’s news pilot now reaches 400 publications Google’s News AI pilot, launched in 2025, now includes more than 400 publications worldwide. Partners include Axios, The Financial Times, Forbes, CNN, Post and Courier, Texas Tribune, Oil City News and Shaw Media.
Google pays participating publishers for content supporting AI-generated article overviews and customizable audio briefings. Both features include attribution and links to original reporting. Google News AI Pilot Reaches 400+ Publishers Including Axios, FT and Forbes CNN executive Sam Felix said the agreement creates: “new pathways for audiences to access CNN’s unparalleled journalism while being compensated for the delivery and use of our unique intellectual property in connection with AI products.
” SPUR wants AI content use counted Meanwhile, the SPUR coalition released its open-source Content Telemetry Standard on October 2, 2026. The framework would help publishers track when AI systems retrieve, reference, cite or display their content, along with related user engagement. That information may provide publishers with more leverage during licensing negotiations.
However, the framework might not be able to tell whether AI firms have used their content for training purposes before, nor do they compel payment from those firms. Instead, it gives a clearer picture of how their content is being used by AI systems. SPUR co-founder David Buttle explained: “Publishers and rights-holders must have control over their own content and be fairly remunerated when that content is used by others.
” Associated Press executive Kristin Heitmann called it “an important step toward fair, transparent licensing relationships. ” As reported by Digiday, SPUR has requested that Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta to join its advisory board. However, none has disclosed any such partnership yet, and CNN’s agreement does not relate to the initiative.
The cost side falls hardest on smaller AI builders According to Gartner, global investment in artificial intelligence is projected to hit $2. 7 trillion by 2026, resulting in an annual increase of 49. 5%.
The forecast covers the entire AI market and not journalism licensing specifically However, premium content deals provide bigger companies with yet another edge, while smaller players would hardly be able to afford similar access options. Other media companies achieve some results through legal channels. As stated earlier by Cryptopolitan, several lawsuits regarding copyright violations against OpenAI and Microsoft are underway, with external briefs on fair use due on October 16, 2026.
Whether the money offsets lost traffic The bigger question is whether licensing income can make up for declining search referrals. The Reuters Institute’s 2026 survey of 280 media leaders across 51 countries found that 20% expected substantial AI-related revenue, 49% anticipated minor contributions, and another 20% expected none. SPUR expects that better tracking would enhance the negotiating power of publishers.
However, the actual results will depend on the acceptance of this standard by AI companies as well as their provision of usage information that can be validated by independent means. If you're reading this, you’re already ahead. Stay there with our newsletter.
